Better together: why construction needs collaboration to work efficiently
It’s widely acknowledged, since the Latham Report over two decades ago, that there needs to be more and better collaboration across the construction industry. The sector is fragmented, and project based; focused on getting the job done and moving as swiftly as possible to the next. But more than most other sectors Construction brings together a broad set of complex skills with multiple stakeholders, diverse supply chains and large delivery teams of architects, designers, engineers and contractors who will often be working together for the first time.
So effective and efficient collaboration is vital to achieving success. The Industry needs to face up to the challenges of delivering value for money and best outcomes to private and public sector clients.
Innovative technologies and new ways of working are helping to break down barriers between the different players in the construction process. But it is also about a fundamental shift in mindset. For the industry to truly move forward it needs to understand the benefits of the new technology available and the opportunities it presents for creating new business models and embracing productive, profitable and collaborative strategies.
